There are several different types of online gambling, from casinos to poker to sports betting. Some of them have become more popular due to advances in technology. However, all are illegal under various federal statutes.
One is the Wire Act, which prohibits illegal gambling on sporting events. Another is the Travel Act, which prohibits illegal gambling on interstate commerce.
The “fun” part of gambling is not always the most important. It might be the smallest detail, such as a wager on the total number of points scored in a game.
The best gambling is the one that is legal and regulated. This is the case with the Liechtenstein International Lottery, which was the first commercially available online gambling venue.
Aside from the UIGEA, there are seven federal criminal statutes involved in illegal online gambling. Among them are the Wire Act, the Travel Act, and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). These statutes impose fines and imprisoned for up to five years for their violations.
Another statute in the mix is the CRS Report RS21984 abridged version, which is a list of statutes, and the citations to the state laws that have cited them. It is also the CRS Report RS22749 abridged version, which is based on the same citations and contains the text of the statutes.
Finally, the aforementioned UIGEA prohibits financial institutions from accepting payments from a person who places an illegal online bet. However, these requirements are largely enforced by state law.
