The Basics of Poker

Poker

Poker is a card game played between two or more players and where the objective is to win the pot (all the chips bet during any deal). The game originated in England in the mid-18th century and spread throughout America by the end of that same period.

One of the most important aspects of poker is that your hand is usually only good or bad in relation to what another player has. For example, K-K is a great hand but if the other guy has A-A your kings will lose 82% of the time. That is why it is very important to know your opponent’s range and adjust your strategy accordingly.

Before the cards are dealt there is an initial amount of money put into the pot by the 2 players to the left of the dealer. This is called an ante, blind, or bring-in. This money gives players an incentive to play and also helps prevent cheating or collusion.

When the cards are dealt there is a round of betting where each player can raise or fold his/her hand. After the betting round the flop, turn, and river are dealt. Each of these cards give the player more information on what type of hand they have and what to do.

One of the best ways to improve your poker skills is to observe the game from the sidelines and learn how the experts do it. Studying the moves made by experienced players allows you to learn from their mistakes and incorporate successful elements of their strategy into your own.
