Some of the most famous casinos in the world can be found in places like Monte Carlo, Monaco; Estoril, Portugal; and Corfu and Baden-Baden, Germany. These casinos are known for their glitz, glamour, and history. Some are even featured in famous movies and TV shows. However, not all casinos are made equal – some are more popular than others.
Gambling in some form probably predates recorded history, with primitive protodice (cut knuckle bones) and carved six-sided dice among the earliest archaeological finds. But the idea of a place where different forms of gambling could be enjoyed under one roof did not develop until the 16th century, when gambling mania swept Europe. Italian aristocrats would hold private parties at places called ridotti, and these were the precursors of today’s casinos.
Most casinos make their money by taking advantage of the fact that each gambling game has a built in statistical advantage for the house. This advantage is usually very small, and it varies from game to game. In games such as roulette, blackjack, and video poker, it is known as the house edge. In games such as baccarat and craps where players play against each other, the casino takes a percentage of total wagers in a given session, which is known as the vig or rake.
